Overview

Leveraging my skills and passion for karate, I designed a streaming app to simplify discovering and accessing karate content. The platform’s intuitive navigation and search features help users find videos, tutorials, competitions, and more. This project was my first time using Figma, where I initially practiced by replicating designs from Crunchyroll, before evolving the app with favorite elements from top streaming platforms. I also wanted to learn how to effectively integrate button components to streamline user interactions, making this experience a meaningful blend of my design skills and karate knowledge.

Role:

In this project, I took on multiple responsibilities, including:

  • UX Researcher: Identified user needs by understanding how martial arts enthusiasts search for and consume content.
  • UI/UX Designer: Developed an intuitive interface focused on smooth navigation and efficient content discovery.
  • Interaction Designer: Designed seamless search flows and filtering options to enhance the user experience.
  • Product Strategist: Aligned the app’s features with both user expectations and karate-specific content requirements, ensuring relevance and accessibility.

This role allowed me to merge my personal passion with professional skills, resulting in a well-rounded and user-centered product.

Problem

Karate enthusiasts often face challenges in discovering relevant content due to the overwhelming amount of information available across various platforms. Many existing streaming services lack dedicated sections for martial arts, making it difficult for users to find specific tutorials, training videos, and competitions. Additionally, the navigation and search functionalities of these platforms can be cumbersome, leading to frustration and wasted time.

This project aimed to address these issues by creating a streamlined app that focuses on karate content, providing users with an efficient way to search, filter, and access material tailored to their interests and skill levels.

Solution

To address the challenges faced by karate enthusiasts in finding relevant content, I designed a streaming app that offers a focused and user-friendly experience. Key features of the app include:

  • Intuitive Navigation: A clean, organized layout for easy browsing across tutorials, competitions, and training videos.
Search Engine & Results
  • KTargets: A feature offering 60-second, straight-to-the-point videos that hit right on target, delivering concise and powerful insights, tips, and highlights to keep users engaged and informed.

UX Research

To inform the design of the karate streaming app, I conducted comprehensive user research focusing on the needs and behaviors of martial arts enthusiasts. The research process included:

  • Interviews: Conducted one-on-one interviews with karate practitioners of varying skill levels to understand their motivations for seeking out content, the types of videos they value most, and their frustrations with existing platforms.
  • Competitive Analysis: Analyzed other streaming services and martial arts websites to identify gaps in the market and best practices in user experience design. This helped inform decisions on navigation, layout, and content categorization.

Through this research, I gained valuable insights that shaped the app's features and design, ensuring it effectively meets the needs of its target audience.
